What everyone wants is to stay well longer and be less dependent on other people
The Living Longer Better Programme will help you achieve this

IT'S QUALITY OF LIFE THAT MATTERS AS WELL AS QUANTITY

Life expectancy has increased dramatically from about 70 in 1948 when the NHS was founded to about 80 today, although there is still a big gap between the life expectancy of people who live in the most deprived parts of our country and those who live in the wealthiest parts. it also seems that the yearly increase in life expectancy is slowing and the reasons for this are a subject of hot debate. however what is of greater interest to both policy makers and individuals is healthy life expectancy, how long you will live well, independent and with a good quality of life. the other way to look at it is how long will you live with a poor quality of life, dependent on other people for the basic activities of life such as dressing or getting to the toilet on time

We are optimists. Based on strong scientific evidence we believe that
  • the onset of dementia and frailty, the two principal causes of dependency on others, can be prevented and delayed
  • the reduction in risk of dementia could be as much as 25%
  • People can regain physical ability no matter their age or the number of diseases they may have
  • the period of dependency, in which you are very dependent on others, can be shortened
Our Living Longer Better Programme will help you achieve the goal not just of a longer life but a longer healthier life , reducing your risk of dementia and frailty and therefore reducing the need for social care. As with any task in life such as choosing a holiday  it helps to have plan
the Programme starts by helping you
  • decide what you would like life to be like particularly  in your eighties and nineties and
  • identify what you dread might happen and then
  • make a plan for your future

To help you realise your plan we have a range of programmes covering all aspects of living longer both for your own future and to help if you are supporting a partner or parent set out below is a list of the Programmes, each of which has a number of episodes
  • the Understanding Ageing Programme understand the relationship between ageing, loss of fitness, disease and the prevailing negative beliefs and attitudes
  • the Brainability Programme increase your brain power and reduce the risk of dementia
  • the 4S Fitness Programme - increase strength, stamina, skill and suppleness
  • the Body Maintenance Programme - look after your body better
  • the Better Healthcare Programme Reduce the Impact of disease, both by preventing disease and preventing the complications and consequences of disease
  • Good Death Programme - reduce the risk of a bad death by being clear about what you want or don't want
  • the Feel Better Programme how to engage more and reduce the risk of depression
  • the Othercare Programme for people supporting a parent or partner
